Diabetes is a growing health issue in Nigeria, particularly among the elderly, due to factors such as poor dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, and lack of awareness. The elderly population is especially vulnerable to type 2 diabetes, which is often underdiagnosed and poorly managed in rural and semi-urban areas. In Kaduna State, as in many parts of Nigeria, there are limited awareness programs targeting the elderly regarding the prevention, early detection, and management of diabetes. This lack of awareness often leads to poor disease management and increases the risk of complications such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure, and neuropathy. Given the increased prevalence of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, this study aims to evaluate the awareness and management of diabetes among elderly residents in Kaduna State and to identify gaps in healthcare delivery and education.
Despite the growing burden of diabetes in Nigeria, especially among the elderly, there is a significant gap in awareness and knowledge about the disease within this demographic in Kaduna State. The elderly often experience barriers in accessing healthcare services, such as inadequate healthcare facilities, the stigma associated with chronic illness, and a lack of diabetes education. This results in suboptimal management of diabetes, leading to an increased risk of complications. This study seeks to assess the level of awareness about diabetes and the effectiveness of current management strategies for elderly residents in Kaduna State.
The study will focus on elderly residents in Kaduna State, assessing their awareness of diabetes and the management of the condition. Limitations include potential recall bias among participants and the difficulty in accessing certain rural communities due to transportation challenges and geographical constraints.
